People who need testing for coronavirus in Bolton can now be swabbed without even leaving their car

People who want to get tested for coronavirus in Bolton can now do so - without even leaving their car.

A new drive-through screening service has been launched today (Tuesday) aimed at people showing early suspected symptoms of COVID-19.

Currently, there are three confirmed cases of the condition in the borough - and 23 in Greater Manchester. A person died at North Manchester General Hospital at the weekend.

NHS England said he was aged 'over 60' and had 'significant underlying health conditions'. He had also recently travelled from an affected area, said to be Italy.

Six people in the UK have now died after contracting coronavirus.

People who suspect they may be affected are asked to first call 111. Staff may then direct them to a local health centre being used as the base for testing.

Hand sanitiser: how to make your own

The location of the Bolton drive-through testing facility has not been released by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.

Anyone at risk can either book a screening or a home visit.

Those attending the clinic will be directed to a designated parking bay at the rear of the building, where they will be swabbed by a member of the staff while in their car.

The service has been planned in an effort to reduce the risk to staff and the public but anyone with more serious symptoms will still be sent to the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Bolton NHS Trust has released the following advice:

  • Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
