People who drink black coffee 'more likely to be psychopaths'

Are you unable to function in the morning without a large cup of black coffee?

If so, join the club - but, worryingly, we could be psychopaths if we enjoy bitter, black coffee.

That's according to a  new study  published in the journal Appetite, anyway.

The research surveyed more than 1,000 adults.

The participants were required to identify their tastes, preferences and favourite foods, drinks and flavours.

The findings were then extrapolated and those taking part engaged in a series of personality tests.

These exams assessed a variety of traits - including, somewhat darkly, sadism, narcissism and psychopathy.

The  University of Innsbruck  researchers in charge of the study discovered a penchant for bitterness was linked to psychopathic behaviour.

Chicory, black coffee, and strong ales should all ring alarm bells, apparently.

Oh, and according to experts, there's three categories of "tasters" when it comes to bitterness.

Intrigued? Yeah, so were we.

These groups are supertasters, who taste all bitter foods very strongly, non-tasters, who often love these foods because they don’t taste them strongly, and tasters, whose likes and dislikes vary.

So, what do we mean by psychopathic traits? Do we mean murder, apathy towards civilisation and a dark sense of selfishness?

Well, no, thankfully.

Instead, researchers reckon if you like black coffee you're more likely to exhibit low-level psychopathy: inflicting pain on others, everyday sadism, that sort of stuff.

Have a great day.
