People warned to stop walking along railway line in Nottinghamshire

A warning has been issued by police after reports of an increasing number of people walking along a railway line in Nottinghamshire.

Rushcliffe South Police, which covers Radcliffe, Bingham, Cotgrave, Leake and Keyworth, says people have been using the Great Central Railway line as a footpath.

The force says people have been using the tracks as a thoroughfare between Ruddington and East Leake.

While the tracks are currently not being used by the usual heritage locomotives, a number of non-passenger services are still using the route as they come off the Midland Mainline.

The force said: "It is not acceptable to trespass on any railway line even if it appears to be closed.

"It is trespass and could lead to a serious accident.

"For your own safety and to ensure young people are not encouraged to think rail lines are a place to walk or have fun please stick to the numerous public footpaths that are in the local area."

The Great Central Railway, which runs past Rushcliffe Country Park, is home to Ruddington's Heritage Railway.

It once shared Victoria Station with the Great Northern Railway, but when they emerged from the tunnel which ran under the Lace Market at Weekday Cross Junction, they split into two lines, on high level arched viaducts over Broad Marsh and Arkwright Street.

A vast part of the GCR main line was closed by British Rail in 1968, but a ten-mile stretch of surviving track is now operated by the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) heritage group.
