People walking on ice at Edinburgh's Blackford Pond given dressing-down by police

People venturing out onto the ice at Blackford Pond were given a dressing down by police on Saturday afternoon.

Officers were seen shouting at a groups of people, including dog walkers and children, who were risking serious injury by walking on the frozen pond. An eyewitness told Edinburgh Live police were patrolling the area around lunchtime.

This follows multiple police warnings urging people not to put themselves in danger by straying onto frozen water. Pictures have emerged in recent days of people across the city venturing out onto ice as temperatures plummet below zero. More freezing conditions are forecast on Saturday evening into Sunday morning.

When asked about these patrols, a spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Areas with frozen lakes, ponds, canals and reservoirs can be beautiful places to visit but all too often many people risk their lives by venturing onto frozen water.

"It is impossible to know exactly how thick the ice cover is at all points on a reservoir. As the weather conditions change and temperatures fluctuate this will also impact the ice cover. Going onto the ice or letting your dog on the ice is very dangerous."

Edinburgh Live reported earlier on Saturday how an Edinburgh man was warning pet owners to keep their animals away from frozen ponds and lochs after he had to jump in and rescue a teenager and three dogs from ice.

Gym owner Chris Flemming sustained burns in the incident, and says he now knows all too well about the dangers the current conditions pose.

The Met Office today issued a fresh weather warning for large parts of Scotland, with more ice set to form overnight on Saturday into Sunday.

Police say people should check out the Royal Life Saving Society UK website for further information on how best to keep yourself save near frozen water.
