People urged to 'stay away' from Wigan A&E as hospital struggles with high number of patients

Members of the public have been warned to stay away from a Wigan accident and emergency department as the hospital struggles with patient numbers.

People with minor issues have been told to think twice before attending Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

Medical director and consultant cardiologist Dr Sanjay Arya issued the warning via social media.

He said there is currently high demand for a wide range of services - and medical attention must not be diverted from those in serious need.

Dr Arya wrote: "We are currently experience high demand on our emergency services with some patients attending our A&E department with minor issues that could be dealt with elsewhere.

"It is so important that we save our emergency care for those who are experiencing serious or life-threatening illnesses and need our urgent care the the most."

He said the hospital staff were doing 'an incredible job' to care for the most unwell people, making sure they get the help they need as quickly and as safely as possible.

But he added: "But we need your help, so before you rush to A&E please help them by choosing the right NHS service and only attend hospital if you have an appointment or if you have an urgent or life-threatening issue."
