People urged to join in minute's applause as second national lockdown ends

People are being encouraged to hold a minute's applause on their doorsteps this week to 'lift everybody's spirits' at the end of the second national lockdown.

Jenny Gee, of Gedling, says the Raise the Roof campaign would show appreciation for the work of NHS staff and well as helping people's own mental health.

The 34 year old is planning the applause for 7pm on Tuesday, December 1.

She said: "I want to do this for key workers, but also for everybody else to lift their spirits. It's difficult for everyone at the moment and you can feel everyone is really struggling this time around.

"It's so important that people's energy levels are lifted because at the moment it just feels like everyone is trying to keep going, to keep their head above water.

"I have spoken to one elderly lady who says she really loved when everyone used to go outside and clap and that she would love for it to happen again. That's what it's about, it builds a real sense of community."

Jenny has carried out a lot of work for the Harley Jae Trust, a charity which supports children with life-limiting conditions.

People are also encouraged to flash their lights, beep their horns and crash their frying pans together come 7pm.

A weekly 'Clap for Carers' was held during the first lockdown of the UK, designed to celebrate the hard work of everyone in the NHS, but it was stopped earlier this year.

Jenny has thanked her friends and family who have helped to distribute flyers and advertise the event, which she wants as many people as possible to join in on.
