People urged to check if they're in wrong council tax band as thousands could be incorrect

If you pay council tax, you are now being urged to check that you are in the correct band with thousand of people potentially paying more than they need to.

It comes as the latest 'need to know' updates from Martin Lewis' MSE (Money Saving Expert) warned people that hundreds and thousands of people could be in the wrong band.

In their 'Money Tips Email' for the week of January 4, the experts explain that it is currently thought "100,000s of homes in England and Scotland are in the wrong band" adding that "re-banding isn't quick, but the provisional checks to see if it's worth it are."

If you live in Scotland, you can use Scottish Assessors. To check your council tax band you can do the following:

  • Click on the website above
  • Enter your postcode or address under the purple box with the text 'To Search for a Council Tax band'
  • Enter your details
  • Scroll to find you address

Beside your address, it should tell you what band you are in such as A, B or D, and so on.

MSE say that it is worth doing a valuation check and if that says you may be in the wrong band, it is worth using their valuation check to work out what your home's 1991 value would be (as that's what counts for council tax).
