People urged not to drop discarded masks and gloves on streets amid coronavirus crisis

Glasgow City Council has urged people not to discard of masks and gloves on the street amid concern from the public during the coronavirus crisis.

A number of items of PPE and face coverings have been spotted on streets around Glasgow, with growing concern over the safety of staff and volunteers picking up the litter.

One tweet read: "Staff and volunteers have to pick this hazardous litter up. There’s a person behind every job. Please let’s be considerate and dispose of rubbish properly."

Glasgow City Council has said they understand additional concern regarding littering of protective equipment and said anyone spotted discarding of items could be fined.

A spokesman for the council said: “Littering of any kind is anti-social behaviour and any culprit is liable to be fined.

“We fully understand the added concern caused by any litter potentially having been used as protection in relation to the coronavirus.

“If notified directly, we can ensure such litter is dealt with appropriately.”
