People unhappy at 'three-people private hire limit' in Sefton

Private hire passengers in Sefton have been left disappointed after being refused journeys if the group has more than three people.

A number of people across the borough have voiced their frustration at booking cars, only to find their party cannot be taken in full.

Mandy Kenny from Netherton said: "I don't know if this is the law or guidelines or what, and if it is I don't understand why we haven't been told."

Alison Roberts said: "It makes no sense. Whether sitting in the front or back, unless there's an air tight screen, it's all the same, all breathing the same air."

@1bats1 tweeted Sefton Council asking: "Hi are private hire drivers allowed to refuse four passengers as this is happening a lot."

Private hire and taxi drivers have been allowed to work throughout lockdown, though some of the guidelines have changed over time.

Back in March people were advised to only use them where absolutely necessary for essential reasons.

But since lockdown has eased, drivers are allowed to take fares as normal.

When the ECHO spoke to Delta Taxis this afternoon, the operator said the number of passengers accepted into the vehicle is at the drivers' discretion.

She said: "My advice would be to let the operator know how many of you there are when booking, so that if a driver doesn't feel comfortable with accepting the fare, a different person can be sent."

Government advice also says drivers can refuse to take passengers who are not wearing face coverings.

Sefton Council has been approached for comment.
