People trapped in cars as Met Eireann forecast arctic weather blitz for Ireland

Mountain rescue has had to respond to people trapped in their cars after they tried to drive through the "impassible" Sally Gap in the snow.

Gardai are warning motorists to stay away from the Wicklow road as it's completely covered under a blanket of snow.

People were left trapped up the mountain earlier today after being completely caught as the blizzard blitz hit.

The mountain rescue team had to respond to get the motorists to safety.

Local page Wicklow Alerts sent a warning to everyone with pictures showing the arctic conditions up the hills.

They said: "SALLY AND WICKLOW GAPS BOTH NOW IMPASSABLE 10/2/2020 1225HRS

"Gardai are advising drivers to be aware of heavy snowfall in the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap areas, which are now totally impassable. Please avoid these locations.

"We understand that Mountain Rescue are currently rescuing people trapped in cars on the Sally Gap that were caught out in the earlier snowfall."

Gardai in Wicklow also posted photos saying they're "not kidding" when they say it's "not nice up there".

They said: "This is the Military Road leading to the Gap taken just now, not even the Gap itself which is much worse."
