People told to 'not even light a cigarette' due to major gas leak

People in Banks have been told to keep windows shut and "not even light a cigarette" due to a major gas leak coming from a burst pipe.

The pipe has been burst during road works on a housing estate being built behind Aveling Drive.

Residents have been warned to not cook or turn light switches on as the leak continues, with people even able to hear the gas hissing out the pipe.

One resident told the ECHO : "We've been told to not open windows, not cook and don't touch sockets or turn lights on. A digger has hit a pipe where the road works are.

"No one is hurt and didn't hear the pipe being hit but can hear it escaping"

Another resident took to Facebook. They said: "Anybody living in Aveling Drive and surrounding roads needs to close your windows and do not use gas appliances.

"The work men has hit a gas line in the road they are digging and now running round to houses telling them to not even light a cigarette. It smells so bad of gas"

A spokesman for Cadent, which manages the local gas network, said: “We got a call at 1215 to a report of damage to a gas main and we arrived on site by 1pm. It appears a third-party has caused damage to the underground main.

"Our teams have checked nearby buildings and everything is fine. There has been no need to evacuate anybody, but a small cordon is in the place around the immediate area, to keep things safe while our team repairs the damage.”
