Alan Carr said people thought Amanda Holden was his "deloded" wife who didn’t realise he was gay while they recently filmed together in Italy.

The pals were renovating a Sicilian house bought for one euro in the new BBC show The Italian Job, when locals who hadn’t heard of them assumed they were husband and wife.

During his appearance on The Graham Norton Show, which aired on Friday he said of the project: “It was proper hands on.

“I had all the tools and everything, but I am not handy at all, and I don’t know now if it’s worth a euro.

Cate Blanchett, Margot Robbie, Beverley Knight, Carr, and RAYE join Graham Norton during the filming for the Graham Norton Show (PA)

"The fun thing was nobody knew who we were so when we went out people thought we were husband and wife, and that Amanda was a poor deluded woman.”

The pair have been pals for years and it’s been reported lately that they are set to continue working together on Britain’s Got Talent where Carr is rumoured to be taking over from David Walliams.

Walliams stepped down after he was caught on microphone during a break in BGT filming making a vulgar comment about a female contestant.

Carr is rumoured to be the replacement for David Walliams (L) on the Britain’s Got Talent panel alongside, Simon Cowell (centre-left), Holden (centre-right) and Alesha Dixon (right) (PA)

Carr is said to be the ITV producer’s favourite to take over from the former Little Britain star alongside fellow judges Holden, Alesha Dixon and Simon Cowell when the show returns for 2023.

Carr, who also has his upcoming autobiographical sitcom Changing Ends in which an actor will play his character, was joined on Graham Norton’s show with other guests actresses Cate Blanchett, Margot Robbie, singer/actress Beverley Knight and singer RAYE.
