People stunned at man's response after finding money in Asda cash machine

People rushed to commend a man's actions after he found money in a cash machine in Wirral.

He spotted the money at the ATM at the Asda in Birkenhead North and he quickly took it to hand in at the cigarette counter.

Posting on Facebook in hopes of finding the owner, he said: "If you left your money at the cash machine at Birkenhead North Asda today (December 2) at 12ish...

"I handed it in to the ciggy counter in Asda. They were going to log it in their book etc."

People were quick to respond to his post telling them he had restored their faith in humanity.

One said: "Great to see honest people."

Another said: "Well done nice to see there are still some honest people."

A third said: "Well done for being an honest person."

And a fourth said: "You have restored my faith in human nature. Well done x x"

While another said: "Better to let it go back into the machine as it gets credited back to account."

The original poster said: "I thought that, but also thought leaving it might have seen it taken by someone else? This way the Asda team will make sure it gets returned to the account."

What happens if you leave your money in the cash machine?

According to Link, the UK's largest cash machine network, in most cases, the ATM will wait a few seconds and then retract the cash and your account will be recredited.

But if your account is not recredited, you should contact your bank or building society.

Link added: "They can check your account and if necessary, contact the ATM operator. If possible, try to have the following information to hand: where the ATM was, the date and time you tried to use the ATM and the amount of cash you tried to withdraw."

Millions of pounds are withdrawn from cash machines every week, though, according to data collected by Link, the number is falling.

In 2016 Link recorded a record high of over £3,000m pounds worth of transactions, but with the rise of contactless that number has been dropping and it was lower than 2001 data during the pandemic.

In 2020, Link recorded a little over £1,500m pounds worth of transactions, half what it had been four years earlier.
