People spot entirely false claim during Liz Truss interviews

A number of people have pointed out a complete untruth stated by Prime Minister Liz Truss during interviews this morning.

Earlier this month, Ms Truss announced the Government would guarantee the average household will pay no more than £2,500 in energy bills. However, the guarantee is a maximum price per unit of gas and electricity, so households which consume more than the average will see their bills higher than that.

During an appearance on CNN on Sunday (September 25), Ms Truss incorrectly said that "no household" would pay more than £2,500 on energy bills.

But as the figure is based on "typical household use" this is categorically untrue. For example, according to government figures, the typical bill for a detached house under the new Energy Price Guarantee will be £3,300, while for a semi-detached house it will be £2,650.

Ms Truss repeated her comments on UK radio shows this morning (Thursday). She said the "maximum will be £2,500" - and people have certainly noticed.

Taking to Twitter, Alexandra Hough said: "Liz Truss claiming 'Making sure that people are not paying more than £2,500'? Untrue." Maria Cullen said: "It's unacceptable but not surprising, that Liz Truss went from one local radio station to another, misleading people about public energy bills.

Rick Lecoat said the "misinformation" could bankrupt people, while Nigel Pearson said: "She has had several days to prepare and she lied in most, if not all, [radio] interviews".
