People share their theories on source of 'big bang' heard across Liverpool

A loud bang that was heard across the city this morning left many people scratching their heads as to what might have caused it.

Merseyside Police said they were not aware of any call-outs relating to the big bang that woke residents in Bootle, Anfield and Orrell Park shortly after 9am today (Tuesday).

From the comments received from ECHO readers, it was clear the noise was heard over a wide area.

And as well as some not altogether serious theories, some had very definite views as to caused it.

Here were some of the replies we received:

Kelly Bunting said: "I heard it in Litherland. Just dropped my son off, tuned my back then boom...I thought it was the school I nearly died!"

Abby Fairclough said: "I heard it in Netherton, sounded like it was all the way from the docks!"

Gregory Loughlin said: "Was really loud in Litherland. Thought it was thunder."

Luke Gardner said: "Was in Bootle at the time and heard it there! Really loud!"

Sandra Faulkner said: "I heard it from Walton Park, we often hear the docks but this seemed closer."

Stk said: "It was on the docks at EMR (European Metal Recycling), this happens a lot when a car is getting crushed, if it still has fuel in the tank it will explode. I was right next to EMR when it happened and I felt the blast wave."

Shelly78 said: "Was really loud here in Bootle. I thought it it came from building site at end of road."

N1cky17 said: "I heard it and definitely was an explosion of some kind, am in Litherland and sounded so close."

kiddak said: "I live in West Derby and I heard it!"

Lizzie74 said: "I thought it was a heavy load going over Walton flyover."

craigleo0496 said: "I could hear it in Wavertree/Childwall. Thought it was some builders nearby."

annono said: "People are so dramatic, I live right opposite here and it just sounded like a container fell over."

Alan Richardson said: "Container dropped in the docks, happens all the time."
