People seen climbing out of window to escape 'suspicious' blaze at Adelaide massage business

Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a massage parlour in Adelaide's CBD.

Footage has emerged of people escaping what police say is a suspicious fire at a massage business in Adelaide's CBD on Wednesday evening.

In a statement, SAPOL said officers and Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) crews were called to the business in Vaughan Place, near the corner of Rundle Street, around 6:00pm.

SAPOL said four people who were inside the business were treated for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation.

All four were taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, SA Ambulance Service confirmed.

Nine MFS trucks, two command vehicles and 36 officers took half an hour to extinguish the blaze.

MFS crews are now using thermal imaging to identify and extinguish any hot spots.

An MFS spokesperson said although crews are still investigating, the fire possibly started on the ground floor of the building and moved up to the first floor, where the massage parlour was located.

The spokesperson said one of the people inside the building walked down through smoke and fire to the ground.

In a video supplied to the ABC by neighbour Kristen Lucas, another person can be seen climbing from a window on the upper level.

Fire 'just kept getting bigger'

"I was inside when I heard a bang and a whooshing noise coming from outside, so I went out on the balcony to see what was happening and saw the fire blazing," Ms Lucas said.

She said she called police to notify them, too.

"The fire just kept getting bigger. Every 30 seconds or so it would make a booming noise and we heard glass smash from the inside of the building," she said.

"The smoke was black and thick and blanketing the whole sky.

Ms Lucas said by that time, onlookers were gathering in the area and others were appearing in the upstairs window.

"They were yelling that they didn't want to jump but then people were saying things like 'you have to!', 'we'll catch you!', and thankfully they got down safely," she said.

"A couple minutes later, the fire brigade came up Vaughan Place. Luckily they put the fire out quickly, but it was pretty scary how quickly it was burning until then."

Road restrictions are in place and police have urged people to avoid the area if possible.

Police suspect the fire was "deliberately lit" and urged witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.
