People scratching their heads after a photo of Magaluf is used for Penarth festival ad

It's a great place to go when the sun is out and has some great bars - but that's about all Penarth has in common with Magaluf.

The upmarket Welsh seaside town, where the average house price is around £320,000, is noticeably different from the Spanish resort town known for its lively nightlife.

But despite their distinctions, organisers of Penarth's summer festival decided to use a photo of Magaluf to promote the event.

And as you can imagine, the reaction on Twitter was particularly savage.

A spokesman said: "The whole point was to use something different and spark interest. A lot of marketing pictures used are of the pier and people may just look past it. It was not a mistake it was used to spark interest and we have had a lot of positive comments.

"If people are angry, it is the minority. Generally people are happy with the event put on by the council."

The festival , organised by Penarth Town Council, will be held on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14.

The town council's own website said the event will be based at the town's "famous seaside Esplanade" and features a downhill derby soapbox race as well as entertainment and street-food.

It closes on Sunday with fireworks from Penarth Pier.

Following criticism on social media, Penarth Town Council said the poster was not intended to make anyone angry but designed to be as eye-catching as possible.
