People 'scared for their children' after shooting incident

People living on a busy road woke up to their neighbourhood cordoned off by police after a shooting.

Residents described the sound of screeching engines and "a single shot" being heard during Sunday night's shocking events on Croxteth Hall Lane. A 30 year-old man is in hospital after being shot in the face, while three men - aged 21, 29 and 32 - are in police custody on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm.

Croxteth Hall Lane resident Monika Makowka, 40, said she heard the sound of a motorbike and then one shot at around 11pm last night (Sunday).

She added: "There were a lot of people outside and then police cars. It's just terrible. I'm scared for my children growing up here."

Another resident said: "I just woke up and found it all taped off outside. There were cars revving and a rumour that someone's been shot in the face. There's always something happening on this road. I'm worried because I've got kids."

While another said: "I woke up to see flashing lights. I don't like seeing the police here."

Police said they were contacted at 11pm yesterday (Sunday) after reports of a loud bang in the area of Croxteth Hall Lane and Ampulla Road. A dark coloured vehicle was seen to leave the area.

Officers attended and found damage to a bus stop on Croxteth Hall Lane consistent with a shooting. A short time later a 30 year-old man presented at hospital with a shotgun pellet injury to his face. His injury is not believed to be life threatening.

Two men, aged 29 and 32, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm without a certificate. Following further enquiries, a 21 year-old man was also later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possessing a firearm without a certificate. All three men currently remain in custody as enquiries continue.

Detective Inspector John Mullen said: "Enquiries are in the very early stages as we seek to establish what happened last night. Firearms have no place on the streets of Merseyside and we remain committed to removing them and the people who choose to carry them. I would urge anyone with information to contact us as a matter of urgency."

Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 22000194829.
