A People’s Committee has been constituted by concerned citizens on Thursday to counter the scrapping of the GO 111, which prohibited construction activity in the catchment areas of the twin reservoirs of Osmansagar and Himayatsagar.
The committee, comprising experts and scientists with public spirit, will examine the effects of tampering with the eco-sensitive area of the reservoirs, a press release informed.
Retired scientist from IICT K.Baburao, Former UNEP consultant & Co-Convenor-South Asian People’s Action against Climate Crisis Sagar Dhara, and retired scientist from the NGRI, Rama Lingeswara Rao will be members of the committee.
They will study the perils the city could face due to seismic activity in the buffer zone of the reservoirs, unpredictability of the high intensity rain, and the unsustainability of drawing drinking water from as far as 100 to 300 kilometres, besides examining the necessity of a law to conserve the entire terrain from Anantagiri Hills to the two filter beds, before making their recommendations, the note said.
