People reluctant to travel in summer amid coronavirus surge

People are more cautious about traveling this summer compared with last summer amid a surge in novel coronavirus cases, according to a nationwide survey by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

In the survey, 84% of respondents said they would refrain from travel this summer, up 17 percentage points from a survey conducted in July last year, when 67% of respondents said they would refrain from travel.

Eighty-eight percent of people aged 60 and older said they would refrain from travel, up from 70% in the July 2020 survey.

Six percent of survey respondents said they would travel beyond prefectural borders, down from 12% last summer, while 9% of respondents said they would travel to nearby destinations without leaving their prefectures, down from 15%.
