17-year-old Iwan Green was the first in line and started queuing up for his fix at 6.30am.

Iwan said: "Mainly here for the free T-shirt but also because I’ve heard so much about Taco Bell but have never had one.

"It’s typically American and always sounded very cool to me. Got myself a volcano burrito with extra meat. Now I’ m off to Bute Park to eat it with a gang of mates.”

Fans will be able to eat in or takeaway from the 49-seat restaurant.

To celebrate their opening, the chain gave out a free Taco Bell t-shirt to the first 100 customers.

Bartender Liam Roch, 18, said: “I had the £5 Chalupa Box which has got a bit of everything in it. I’ve always wanted a Taco Bell. A mate of mine was supposed to bring me one once when he came to Wales on the train to visit from England. But he ended up eating it before I got past Bristol.”

Shop worker Tristan Chiplin, 20, from St Athan turned up with his friend Sam Payne from Llantiwit Major. “We were excited about it being the first one in Wales.

"It’s such a big thing in the States so we were really curious to try it out. I got the crispy chicken taco and fries.  I can’t believe how busy it was in there."

Some of the chain's most popular choices on their menu include the Crunchwrap Supreme, a tortilla stuffed with chicken, beef or beans served in a shell, and the Big Bell box which combines a burrito, taco, nachos and churros all in one box.

They also offer a quesadilla stuffed with three different variety of cheese, a spicy "volcano burrito" and fries smothered in nacho-cheese sauce, beef, sour cream and salsa.

Originally launched in the United States, there are more than 425 Taco Bell restaurants across 27 countries outside of the US.

The company, which also owns KFC and Pizza Hut, aim to expand to a total of 9,000 international restaurants by 2022.
