People pulled from the water after violent winds capsize dinghies

West Kirby RNLI carried out a dramatic rescue after a fleet of dinghies capsized on the River Dee during high winds.

The volunteer crew of West Kirby RNLI Lifeboat quickly assembled and launched after a sudden squall hit a fleet of Laser dinghies on the River Dee .

The wind speed increased from 25 to 40 knots which resulted in all of the dinghies capsizing during a training session.

The dinghy crew were rescued from the water and taken ashore. Some of the crew received first aid treatment from RNLI volunteers.

West Kirkby RNLI searched the area to ensure all the dinghy crew were accounted for.

Four of the dinghies were retrieved and returned to shore, with three unaccounted for.

Andy Brown, West Kirby RNLI Deputy Launch Authority said: "In what was an unforeseen event, the event organisers rightly contacted the Coastguard to request support. Even the most well-prepared and experienced individuals can get into trouble.

"The sea can be hugely unpredictable and with the high wind conditions even more so. Never hesitate to phone 999 and ask for the Coastguard if anyone is in danger near to or on the water.”
