People playing 'spot the mistake' after council puts up banners

People have been asked to "spot the mistake" after Sefton Council put up banners to show how a new development will look.

The local authority launched bold plans to make the area around Bootle Strand shopping centre a new "destination", last year.

A section of land adjacent to Bootle Strand Shopping Centre is to be turned into a “vibrant space” to host a range of events.

Plans for the space, which sits alongside the Leeds Liverpool Canal, include a new food and drink offering and an urban garden.

"Bootle Canalside" hosted its first pop-up event this bank holiday weekend (August 26-30).

Banners displaying how the finished development will look were displayed during the event - but eagle-eyed visitors spotted a problem with them.

A computer generated image of how the area, on Washington Parade, could soon look was on show for all to see.

Posting a photo of the banner in a Facebook group, Gavin Scott wrote: "Spot the mistake? These banners have been up all weekend at the Bootle Canalside event."

One woman responded: "The pic is definitely all wrong, flats not in the right place, loads of stuff in the wrong place, we thought we were looking at it back to front at first but no, the writing is the right way around!"

It seems the picture appears completely back to front, meaning buildings and landmarks in the area are on the opposite side to where they would actually be.

Sefton Council explained printed banners were "flipped" for symmetry, and that it hopes people who attended "got a feel for the site and our future plans".

The work is part of wider plans, aimed at transforming the look and feel of the Bootle for residents, businesses and visitors, and improving the quality of life for the community.
