People over 18 mistakenly told they'd get Covid jab in Indian variant surge area

People over 18 were wrongly told they could come forward for a Covid jab in three areas with rises in the Indian variant.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council had said the council and NHS partners had secured extra doses to be rolled out, but have since walked back on its announcement.

The areas named in the council's announcement were Shear Brow and Corporation Park, Billinge and Beardwood and Bastwell and Daisyfield.

But the local authority has since clarified it made a mistake.

A spokesman said: "Contrary to earlier social media and news reporting, vaccines at the clinics will not be widely available to over-18s.

"They will be available within current government guidance, which is currently anyone over the age of 38, anyone over 18 with an underlying health condition or who lives with someone who has lowered immunity, health and social care staff and carers."

The council had earlier provided a statement saying: "The council and NHS partners have secured extra doses of the Covid-19 vaccine that will be made available to anyone in Blackburn with Darwen aged over 18 from next week."

Reports say the Pfizer vaccine will be available to over 18s from next week.

According to figures correct as of May 8, the Blackburn with Darwen council area has the third highest infection rate in England.

It registered 149 new cases in the seven days up to that date, the equivalent of 99.5 per 100,000 people.

The Indian variant is causing concern among officials, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealing he is "anxious" about the strain.

SAGE - the advisory committee - is meeting on Thursday to discuss a surge in cases.

The meeting, first reported by i news and confirmed by Mr Johnson, comes after the number of B1.617.2 variant infections in Britain almost tripled to 520 as of May 5.

The newspaper claims new figures could show the number of cases has tripled again in the last week to around 1,500.

A member of the committee claimed "a delay is possible" to the final phase of lockdown easing in England as cases increase.

All legal social distancing rules are slated to be abolished from from June 21.

A large number of restrictions are also set to be removed on May 17, such as indoor mixing and overnight stays.

Speaking on a visit to a school in County Durham on Thursday, Mr Johnson insisted "at the moment I can see nothing that dissuades me" from thinking the final stage of ending lockdown rules can happen as hoped on June 21.

But he also suggested the return to "normality" could slip to a later date if the Indian variant "takes off".

Asked if masks and social distancing were going, the Prime Minister told reporters: "I think we have to wait a little bit longer to see how the data is looking but I am cautiously optimistic about that.

"Provided this Indian variant doesn't take off in the way some people fear, I think certainly things could get back much, much closer to normality."

He said "we are anxious about it - it has been spreading" and "there are meetings going on today to consider exactly what we need to do."
