People on Universal Credit can get 50% off train and bus fares this Christmas

In an effort to get people to and from job interviews for less, the Government created a discount card for those claiming certain benefits.

But that doesn't mean that's what you have to use it for - with the 50% off deal working just as well on trips to see the family over Christmas or to the shops.

Minister for welfare delivery Will Quince said: “We want to ensure there are absolutely no barriers for those seeking employment."

He added: “And obviously there’s the savings for people visiting families over the holidays as an additional bonus.”

The Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount card is available to people unemployed and claiming Jobseekers Allowance or  Universal Credit for 3-9 months if they're aged between 18 and 24 or 3-12 months for over 25s.

You can get the card at the jobcentre (DWP)

You might also be able to pick up the card if you are claiming certain other benefits like Incapacity Benefit and Income Support but are actively looking for work. There were more than half a million journeys made using the cards last year.

It effectively halves rail fares for Anytime Day tickets, Off Peak Day tickets and three-month season tickets across all operating services.

Cardholders also get discounts on on the London Underground, DLR, London Buses and on Tramlink.

Other bus services are also included for people outside the south east, with jobcentre staff having details of additional operators.

The Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card is free, and valid for up to three months at any one time.

Cards are handed out by Jobcentre Plus on behalf of transport operators - which means to get one you need to contact your work coach. You can't pick one up from stations or travel agencies.

And there's exrra help available too to get you to work. The Flexible Support Fund managed by local job centres can help people pay for travel to interviews, new clothes for work and training courses.

The cash is a grant - not a loan - so doesn't need to be paid back. However, money is handed out at the discretion of job centre staff, so you'll need to justify the expense with them to get it.
