People on Basic State Pension told to check for payment errors

Pensioners are being urged to get in contact with the Department for Work and Pensions if they fear they are being underpaid with their State Pension amount.

A new factsheet has been released to look at what people should be being paid and what to do if they believe their calculation is wrong.

Britain’s state pension age is set to be reviewed, the Government announced. with Work and Pensions Secretary, Liz Kendall, saying workers today “aren't saving enough for their retirement”.

Labour will be reviving the pensions commission on Monday.

"Put simply, unless we act, tomorrow's pensioners will be poorer than todays, because people who are saving aren't saving enough for their retirement,” Ms Kendall said during a speech to launch the move.

Independent Age has now offered the factsheet to help others make sure they are getting exactly what they are entitled to, and offering insights for those already receiving the benefit.

The State Pension informative guide delves into all aspects of the payments, and gives clear advice on the distinctions between the New and Basic State Pensions, which confuse many.

It also provides information on the right time to claim, options for deferral, how the amount is determined, and potential tax obligations as well as giving help on issues of historical underpayments.

Anyone who is on a Base State Pension could have been missing out on vital money by missing out on National Insurance top-ups.

And in the information it helps work out what you could be entitled to, and advises on what to do if you fear you could have been someone who has missed out on money in the past.

They are advising anyone who missed out on the NI 'top-ups' to get in touch with the Pension Service for a recalculation if they suspect errors.

A survey by the think tank Independent Age revealed that 41% of over-50s are worried about their post-retirement finances, with nearly half admitting to a lack of understanding regarding their financial prospects when they finally leave work.

Guidance from Independent Age reads: "If you qualify for Basic State Pension and can claim State Pension 'top-ups', these are usually calculated for you. But some people - particularly women who paid reduced NI rates - may have had their State Pension miscalculated and underpaid."

"If you think this affects you, contact the Pension Service to ask them to recalculate your State Pension. You can do this whether you're claiming or delaying your State Pension. You can also contact our helpline to arrange to speak to an adviser."

The comprehensive guide to the full State Pension is accessible on the Independent Age website here. Alternatively, you can reach out to them directly by dialling 0800 319 6789.
