‘People often call it talent, but I don’t agree’: Chovy unravels mystery behind his high CS mastery

When it comes to securing CS leads against opponents, few names in League of Legends are as synonymous with consistency as Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon. While many fans attribute this skill to sheer mechanical talent, Chovy sees it differently.

“I just research a lot. People often call it ‘talent,’ but I don’t agree,” Chovy explained in a recent AMA. “While I admit I have more talent than others, calling it just talent feels unfair. I’ve researched a lot and think about it often. Every champion has strong windows at different levels. I calculate those situations, I think about whether there are ways to deal with them, and how to pressure harder when I’m ahead. Since every game starts under the same conditions, if you don’t study, you won’t get good results.”

Gen.G’s star mid laner has long been praised for turning the smallest early-game leads into suffocating pressure on his opponents. When asked about the secret behind his massive CS gaps, he answered bluntly that he secures last hits and prevents my opponent from doing so. He added that players shouldn’t pray for enemies to miss CS. Instead, they should create situations where they miss CS and fall behind in the match. It is easier said than done, but there’s a reason he’s often hailed as Korea’s next Faker.

Chovy even joked about keeping his secrets under wraps, saying, “Unless I’m getting paid to share that knowledge, I don’t want to say too much. If others get better at CSing, it threatens my livelihood. I need to protect my livelihood. Asking me how much it costs? Next question.”

Gen.G’s season has been nothing short of dominant, with a 27-match win streak, titles at both the Mid-Season Invitational and the Esports World Cup, and an overall stellar run in the LCK. However, their ultimate test still lies ahead as they look to conquer Worlds 2025 later this year.

A fan asked Chovy preemptively about the champion picks that Chovy sees himself picking for a skin of his choosing, and he chose: Galio, Aurora, or Aurelion Sol. Among other questions, Chovy revealed that his favorite anime is Solo Leveling, the highest-rated anime on Crunchyroll, becoming the first anime to reach 700,000 user ratings and surpassing the legendary One Piece.

Gen.G will face KT Rolster next in the LCK season playoffs to advance to the grand finals. The team has already qualified for Worlds 2025, and Chovy will be looking to seal his first-ever Worlds title after a very successful year for Gen.G.
