People of Liverpool unite in grief for father and son killed in lift tragedy

Tributes have poured in from across Liverpool for a father and son who died in an industrial accident.

David Bottomley, 53, died at the scene of accident at the Unity Building on Chapel Street last Wednesday when a lift is said to have collapsed.

David's son Clayton, 17, was rushed to hospital but died yesterday.

The father and son, described by a family friend as "peas in a pod" had been working together at the Unity Building in Liverpool city centre.

The friend said David, from West Yorkshire, was a highly experienced insulation fitter and had worked at the site in Liverpool city centre for the past two years.

Clayton, a former Rugby League prodigy, went to work for his dad after a spate of injuries, the friend said.

A Health and Safety Executive investigation was launched last week.

ECHO readers from across the city have united to express their sadness and offer support to the Bottomley family.

Linzi Marsh said: "So so sad it’s heart breaking to think a dad and lad could go to work and not go home."

Candice Gavan said: "So sad now back in the arms of your dad. Thinking of all the family at this terrible time. Rest in peace."

Maureen John Geraghty said: "This is horrendous heart breaking I hope someone going to be responsible for this poor family."

Claire Pugh Thompson said: "Oh no, his poor family. Can’t even begin to imagine what they must be going through. Deepest sympathy to their family. Just heart breaking."

Pauline Fahy added: "The image of his dad, condolences to the family."

Glenys Watson said: "Rest in peace with your dad thinking of your family such a sad loss."

Police released a statement earlier today which read: "Following an incident at a building site on Chapel Street on Wednesday 19 May, we can confirm that an 17-year-old male sadly died in hospital on Sunday 23 May.

"The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers at this time.

"A second man, aged 53, sadly died at the scene of the accident.

"Emergency services were called to a site around 3.30pm to reports that the two men had been found seriously injured after falling.

"An investigation is being carried out by detectives and the Health and Safety Executive."

Laing O’Rourke, who are the lead contractors on the site, have confirmed that the company would cooperate fully with the HSE investigation.

A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson said: “We can confirm there was an incident at the Unity Building in which two men were seriously injured. Tragically, one of the men died at the scene and the second is in a critical condition in hospital.

"Our Health and Safety team is at the site and we and our sub-contractors will cooperate fully with the investigation into what happened. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the men at this extremely difficult time.”

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said: “HSE are aware and are investigating with the police."
