People living in East Renfrewshire will have to live by new lockdown rules that come into force at midnight

People living in East Renfrewshire will have to live by new lockdown rules that come into force at midnight.

The move comes after a spike in coronavirus cases and the restrictions also apply in Glasgow City and West Dunbartonshire.

PAISLEY DAILY EXPRESS: Live news as it happens

The changes are being put in place after another 160 cases were recorded yesterday- the highest since May 16 - and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon admitted we are " in a fragile position".

Those living in areas including Barrhead and Neilston will:

* No longer allowed to meet up with other households

* Only be allowed to spend time with a a loved one in a care home  outside

* Wait seven days for the guidelines to  be reviewed and

* Potentially have to stick to the new regulations for a fortnight.

Hospital visits in the three local authority areas are also restricted.

Scotland has now seen the number of cases since the start of the pandemic in Scotland rise to 20,478. There have been no deaths for nearly a week.

The First Minister said: "I think this should be a wake up call, not just for people in Glasgow City, West Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire.

"It should be a wake-up call for all of us to stick to the guidelines and stop this virus spreading any further or any faster.

"We believe spreading is primarily as a result of household gatherings and in these circumstances, stopping household gatherings for a period and strengthening self-siolation for people who may have been in contact with the virus is the most proportionate action we can take to reduce transmission.

"Taking this step supports our schools to stay open and also limits the impact on jobs and the economy."
