People living across Merseyside have yellow water coming out of their taps

People living in several parts of Merseyside have reported yellow water coming from kitchen and bathroom taps this morning.

Issues with the water have been reported to the ECHO from Thornton, Aintree, Fazakerley, and Kirkby.

The problem has been ongoing since early this morning and residents have been taking to Facebook, sharing pictures of the discoloured water and asking what they are supposed to do for drinking water.

One woman said: “There’s a burst pipe in Melling, turns water up to Aintree yellow this morning

“United Utilities have sent texts saying don’t put a wash on.”

Carla Sumner, who lives on Coney Crescent in Thornton, said: “I have a ten month old son and the whole house is in isolation. I can’t get out to get any water.

“But the support I have had from neighbours is amazing. Random women have messaged me offering to drop water at my step.”

Earlier this morning, United Utilities said: “A burst water main on Satinwood Crescent affecting customers in Liverpool, has been spotted and reported to us. We’ve been out to investigate and found this to be the cause for some of you having poor pressure or discoloured water.

“Our pipes have naturally occurring sediments and minerals which can get disturbed from the bottom of the pipes every now and then, normally when we have carried out a repair or have replaced a section of water main.

“We know it doesn’t look nice but don’t worry, it’s unlikely to be harmful and will settle down again with time. You can help by letting your cold water tap run at a slight trickle until your water runs clear again.

“Our leakage engineers should be on site as soon as possible. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have your taps flowing again very soon.”

An update at around 10am read: “Our engineers are onsite and are working to repair the burst water main Satinwood Crescent. Due to the depth of the water main we are currently waiting for specialist equipment to arrive to help us to complete the repairs."

Since this article was first published United Utilities has said water supplies are returning to normal as work to repair the water main continues throughout the evening.
