People 'leap to safety' as fire rips through house with fears some still trapped inside

At least two people are in hospital after jumping from the roof when a huge blaze ripped through a home in Birmingham.

The fire broke out shortly after 11pm in the property in Regent Road, in the Handsworth area of the city.

Dramatic images show emergency services battling the fire, which sent smoke billowing through surrounding streets.

Police said two people are being treated in hospital after being injured while jumping to safety.

West Midlands Fire service told Birmingham Live: "We were called to a severe fire in a residential property at 11.11pm on Tuesday.

"Crews arrived there within two minutes of the call.

"We sent six fire engines and a hydraulic platform.

"A total of 35 firefighters were there , and this morning some crews still remain.

"Our fire investigation team is working with the police to investigate the cause of this incident."

West Midlands Police said two people had jumped to safety during the fire.

In a tweet, the force said: "Two occupants had to jump from the roof to escape the fire.

"They have not suffered any injuries from the fire but have from the fall.

"Both currently receiving treatment at hospital."

West Midlands Ambulance Service described the injuries as "potentially serious".

A spokesman said: "Two people have been treated for potentially serious injuries after a house fire in Birmingham overnight.

"West Midlands Ambulance Service was called by the fire service at 11:12pm on Tuesday to a serious fire at a property in Regent Road, Handsworth.

"Three ambulances, three paramedic officers, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and the MERIT trauma car with a doctor and critical care paramedic onboard attended the scene.

"When crews arrived, they were presented with two patients who had been inside the building at the time of the fire, a man and woman.

"Although unharmed from the fire itself, the patients had both suffered potentially serious injuries from escaping the building.

"They were treated at the scene for their injuries before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in separate ambulances for further treatment."
