People jumping off pier 265 miles away reported to Merseyside Police by webcam viewer

A webcam viewer based in Liverpool called Merseyside Police to report people jumping off Bournemouth Pier, around 265 miles away.

Merseyside Police received the report on Thursday, March 18 at around 11.22pm.

Despite the pier being 265 miles away, a member of the public voiced their concern after seeing people diving on a webcam video.

Merseyside Police contacted Dorset Police with the information, with the local coastguard service being sent out to investigate.

Poole Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Solent Coastguard - Operations Centre received a call from Dorset Police after Merseyside Police in Liverpool had a member of public contacting them to report seeing people jumping off Bournemouth Pier on the live Web cameras.

"Poole Coastguard Rescue Team & Southbourne Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to investigate the welfare of the people and offer safety advice.

"A search of the pier, beach and areas around the pier was conducted, with no signs of the people who'd been swimming.

"With wet footprints seem to head towards the town, teams stood down to return to the station."
