People in Wales set to be offered third coronavirus booster vaccine this year

It is likely people in Wales will need a single dose booster coronavirus vaccine, Welsh Government has confirmed.

A new strategy has now been published laying out the next steps for the vaccination programme which Welsh Government says highlights the importance of second doses, especially as the new delta variant is spreading in parts of the UK.

It says: "It is likely that those in priority groups 1 – 4 and possibly cohorts 1-9 or wider will need a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine as a booster vaccinations.

"We are planning so that NHS Wales will be ready to deliver this booster as soon as the final advice from JCVI is confirmed, setting out who to vaccinate and in what order.

"We expect to receive interim advice over the summer. Other cohorts may be offered also, pending advice."

In his press conference Mr Drakeford said there are still many unknowns about coronavirus.

"We don't know how long natural immunity lasts, people who have had the illness and had some immunity. We don't know when that begins to wane, we're not certain about how long the vaccine offers protection and we're seeing new variants as well.

"For all those reasons, a booster campaign in the autumn may be necessary".

The strategy says the first to get any booster would be those in the first four priority groups, the "most vulnerable" as if there is a drop in protection they would be affected first and they had their jabs first.

"There is some evidence that a natural immunity doesn't last as long as for older people as it may for those lower down the age spectrum," he said.

Mr Drakeford has today said that all adults in Wales will be offered both doses of a coronavirus vaccine by September and all over-18s will be offered a Covid vaccine by the start of next week (beginning June 14).

Welsh Government say that Wales expects to reach 75% take-up for first jabs across all priority groups and age groups by mid-June, which the First Minister said is six weeks ahead of schedule.

Figures published today show 2.18m people, or 86% of the adult population, have had a first dose and almost 1.25m people have had a second dose.

They show 58 % of 18-19 year olds in Wales have received their first vaccine and 45% of adults in Wales are fully vaccinated.

The same document says no decision has yet been made about offering vaccinations to children.
