People in motorhome travel 200 miles from England to Welsh coast before police turn them away

A group of people have been turned away from west Wales after they were found to have driven a motorhome 200 miles to the Pembrokeshire coast.

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police continue to carry out stop checks throughout the force area as lockdown restrictions on travel remain in place in Wales.

On Tuesday afternoon, they carried out a stop check on a motorhome in the Stackpole area, around five miles south of the town of Pembroke.

Officers from the Pembrokeshire roads policing unit, working with the neighbourhood policing team from Pembroke Dock, questioned the occupants of the vehicle and it turned out it had been rented in the Berkshire area - a round trip of around almost 400 miles.

All occupants of the motorhome were reported for non-essential travel during lockdown and told to return home by police, who escorted them from the area.

The incident was the latest in a huge number of fines dished out by Dyfed-Powys Police since lockdown began in March. While the restrictions have been eased in England, the advice from the Welsh Government is that people should only travel from home if they have a “reasonable excuse” to do so.

This includes travelling for work, shopping for food, or going to the doctor.

With regards to exercise, the guidelines in Wales currently say people should not drive away from home to exercise, an issue that has been the subject of some confusion in recent days.

First Minister Mark Drakeford is expected to announce the outcome of a lockdown review on Friday.
