People in Liverpool face £10,000 fine if they break bank holiday rules

The government has confirmed tougher fines will be coming into effect for those who break social distancing guidelines over the Bank Holiday weekend.

A new criminal offence for people organising or facilitating unlawful gatherings will come into force on Friday, August 28 2020 - ahead of any potential Bank Holiday celebrations.

Organisers of illegal gatherings could find themselves slapped with a fine of £10,000.

Illegal gatherings are classed as raves, unlicensed music events, or any other unlawful gathering of 30 people or more.

Organisers may face a £10,000 fine in a bid to create a new deterrent on the breaches which the government states "put the public most at risk."

Fines of £100 can continue to be issued to those who take part in any illegal gatherings while those who have already received a fine will see the amount of doubled on each offence, up to a maximum of £3,200.

The harsher fines are part of efforts to crack down on illegal gatherings while the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "These gatherings are dangerous and those who organise them show a blatant disregard for the safety of others.

"I am pleased the police have already stepped up their response and I am giving them the tools they need to continue to keep us safe.

"We will continue to crack down on the small minority who think they are above the law."

The sentiments have been echoed on social media.

In a post on Instagram, the official Number 10 account shared a graphic image which reads: "Breaking the rules? Fine. The rules are there to keep people safe.

"If you break them you will be fined."
