People heading to Spain on holiday warned of 'extreme weather' by Foreign Office

Holidaymakers heading to Spain are being warned of "extreme weather" by the Foreign Office.

High winds and snowfall have been affecting travel in some parts with Spain's meteorological office (AEMET) issuing an "extreme risk" warning earlier this week.

The areas said to be covered by the warning include Murcia, Barcelona and Girona along with Alicante and Tarragona. The Balearics, Almeria and Granada are also on high alert, while those heading to Valencia and Albacete are being warned.

People are being urged to check with the Spanish Civil Protection Unit for precautionary advice on the area they are visiting.

The warning was originally issued on Monday, but remains in place today (Tuesday).

According to the Foreign Office: "If you're in the area you should exercise caution and follow the advice of the local authorities."

Almost 19 million British nationals visit Spain each year.
