We see postboxes almost every day, but many of us have passed them without a second thought.
Now however, pictures have begun doing the rounds on social media showing the reality of what is going on beneath the surface, and people can't believe how big a post box really is.
It's something that makes sense when you see it, but is something most of us have never given a second thought. The reality is that the post boxes have an extra 1-2 feet worth of bedding into the ground.
The photo, shared by Twitter user @FelixstoweWeb, has led the British staple to be compared to the Dr Who TARDIS.
Others have compared the post boxes to the Easter Island statues, which shocked people around the world when they discovered the heads had 'bodies' below the surface.
As many have pointed out, the bedding is necessary to keep the post boxes secure in the ground, but many had not thought of the logistics before being confronted with it.
Twitter user Barry Norton wrote: "This is the Easter Island heads all over again! I'm not saying British post boxes were definitely made by UFOs, I'm just asking questions..."
Dr Fern Riddell added: "Well now they just look like extremely angry little robots."
