'People have been relaxing' - reaction in Carlton after surge in Covid cases

Residents in Carlton say they fear people are "relaxing" when it comes to Covid rules after a rapid increase in cases there.

Government figures released on Sunday, February 28 showed the number of Covid cases had risen by 333% in the space of just one week.

The latest statistics released today indicate there have been 42 cases in the seven days leading to February 23, which is a weekly increase of 162.5%.

It means the area's infection rate has reached 413.6 per 100,000 people, making it the second highest in the county, marginally behind Clifton South with a rate of 414.3.

Tom Flynn, 43, who runs a pub in London, is living in Carlton caring for his mum during lockdown.

He said: "Obviously, I think people have been relaxing when it comes to following the rules a bit.

"After all this time in lockdown I think that's understandable. From what I've seen, people were following the rules - wearing masks, keeping their distance, that sort of thing.

"But it's surprising to hear about that sort of increase here.

"I think people are starting to see the end might be in sight. I went to get vaccinated today, as I'm looking after my mum, at the leisure centre. Everyone there was so great - it was fantastic.

"For me, I'm just hoping and praying pubs can reopen on April 12 as they've predicted. I think it should all still happen on June 21, I think something drastic will have to happen for it not to."

Jo Richardson, who has lived in Carlton for almost 40 years, said: "I saw about the big rise in cases - I couldn't believe it, honestly.

"I've no idea why it is has happened. I saw all of those people in the parks in Nottingham. There were so many at the Arboretum - but that wouldn't effect Carlton surely?"

Her husband Doug Richardson told Nottinghamshire Live: "It has to be people not following the rules. It has to be.

"Everyone has relaxed a bit now, unfortunately. Nowhere is open still so it can't be anything else!"

Meanwhile Kevin Harper, 70, said: "It's worrying to hear about, definitely.

"I think they need to get everything back to normal soon - it can't go on like this much longer.

"I've had my jab now, more people are getting it. They have got to get the economy moving again."

Carlton is one of a number of neighbourhoods in Nottinghamshire which has seen a weekly rise in Covid cases.

Despite this, every region of Nottinghamshire has seen infection rates drop in the most recent seven day period.
