People have been evacuated from their homes because of flooding

People have been evacuated from their homes due to flooding.

Gwent Police and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have told residents of Riverside Residential Park in Monmouth to leave their homes before the floods lead to an "emergency rescue".

The residential park is run by Williams Leisure Group who say on their website there are 34 homes on the site.

The company could not confirm how many people have been evacuated.

The evacuation comes after prolonged heavy rain led to rising river levels. There are continuing problems on railway lines across Wales.

Shire Hall in Monmouth town centre has been set up as a temporary rest centre.

The council is transporting people from the site to the hall.

Heavy rain over the weekend in Wales:

Heavy rain causes high river levels across parts of Wales

Natural Resources Wales has issued a flood warning for the River Wye in Monmouth which neighbours the residential park.

The flood warning was put in place at 8.55pm on Friday and remains in place now. It is a flood warning - the second highest level - which says that flooding is expected and immediate action required.

Tim England, Operations Manager for Natural Resources Wales, said: " We’re working with Gwent police and Monmouthshire Council to quickly evacuate people safely from the residential park.

"Recent heavy rain across South Wales is causing the river level on the Wye in Monmouth to rise and will continue to rise for the next few hours.

"The rain may have subsided, but some river levels are still rising as peaks move downstream. We’re encouraging people to stay vigilant and check our website for flood warnings in their areas and listen to any advice given on what action to take."

Other warnings which were in place in Wales, including on the River Teifi and Upper Dee Valley have now been removed.
