People have been asked to stop pooing on South Shields Pier

Humans who defecate on South Shields Pier have been ordered to stop.

Port of Tyne say its staff have discovered human waste on the pier, which poses a health and safety risk to employees and the public.

A sign posted by Port of Tyne warns visitors against using the breakwater as a toilet. Anybody caught defecating on the pier will be banned from returning and could face police action.

The sign states: "In recent weeks the pier watchmen have discovered human faeces on the Pier on several occasions

"The watchmen have picked up the excrement which places the health and safety of our Watchmen and public at risk.

"This must stop immediately.

"Anyone caught carrying out such acts will be removed from the Pier and banned immediately.

"Please respect our environment and keep the Pier a pleasant place to visit."

A Port of Tyne spokesperson confirmed the sign is genuine and has been there since January. They said there have been incidents where staff have had to clean up human waste left on the pier.

The spokesperson said: "The Port of Tyne is the proud custodian of Tynemouth and South Shields Piers, regular maintenance of around £300,000 each year ensures we are able to open the piers to the public.

"Fouling on the piers will not be tolerated, and we are working with Northumbria Police Neighbourhood Team to monitor the situation and take action where appropriate."
