People 'get out of cars' on motorway in 'worst ever' traffic queues

People have reportedly been getting out of their cars on the motorway as traffic queues stretch from the Wallasey tunnel.

Motorists have been reporting huge delays this evening (Friday, September 17) from the Wallasey Tunnel back to the Bidston Moss B&Q junction.

One person said it's the 'worst they've ever seen it' and urged Merseyrail to re-open all of its tolls amid current disruption.

Merseyside Police confirmed they had no incidents in the areas surrounding the tunnel.

The social media user said: "What’s the cause of the enormous delays on the motorway heading towards Wallasey tunnel? This is ridiculous. Worst I’ve seen it! Open all the tolls this is horrendous! Backed up traffic past B&Q Wallasey!"

Another user said: "Allow 1hour extra on your journey through tunnels. Wallasey blocked back to Strand St, Liverpool. Birkenhead town centre and dock roads completely blocked, M53 approach to Wallasey tunnel has queues for miles. What is happening?

"People are getting out of their cars on the motorway because of these awful delays towards the Wallasey tunnel. Sort this out guys the tolls need to be fully opened now this is dangerous!"

Some of the Wallasey Tunnel toll booths are closed due to upgrades.

The AA traffic map says: "Long delays and queueing traffic on A59 Kingsway Tunnel Eastbound at A5027 Gorsey Lane. Congestion to J2 (Moreton Spur) on the M53. Travel time is around 30 minute. Traffic not helped by the problems on the M56."

Earlier this afternoon the M56 between junction 12, Runcorn and junction 14, Chester services, was closed after a crash involving two vans and four cars.

Stagecoach has reported its Birkenhead server 1 and X1 are experiencing delays due to the traffic surrounding the Wallasey and Birkenhead Tunnels.

In a statement they said: "Birkenhead Service 1 and X1 are experiencing severe delays due to congestion in both the Wallasey tunnel and Birkenhead tunnel, and around Chester due to the closure of the m56.

"We will do our best to keep these services running. Sorry for any inconvenience this will cause."
