'People feel very strongly about it' Bonnie Greer on Ireland's 'special relationship' with the US

US writer and commentator Bonnie Greer has said that she feels 'very strongly' about the 'special relationship' between Ireland and the United States.

Greer went viral after she passionately defended Ireland during a segment discussing Brexit on the BBC show Question Time.

During the show she slammed British politicians, warning that if the UK the 'shafted' Ireland, US Congress would not approve any trade deals between the two nations.

After the clip was shared online, she was met with a massive outpouring of positive messages from countless Irish people.

The 70-year-old, who was born in Chicago, has lived in the UK for over forty years and is a naturalised British citizen.

On Saturday she appeared on RTE's Ray D'Arcy Show where she reiterated her support of the 'special relationship' between America and Ireland.

She told D'Arcy: "What people don't realise is that Trump and Boris can sit down and sign an agreement but it's temporary.

"It has to be ratified by the House. It ain't gonna happen"

"The friends of Ireland are Republicans, Democrats, Independents....I've got Irish congresspeople tweeting me saying 'you're right, it's not gonna fly.'"

She added: "Britain needs to understand that the special relationship is with Ireland and when Americans are talking about the old country they're talking about here [Ireland]."

"And people feel very strongly about it. I feel very strongly about it and this is my first visit to Dublin, it's a beautiful place."

She was met with widespread praise following her turn on the Question Time panel after she said Ireland 'owes Britain nothing' and stressed that the Good Friday Agreement could not be undermined by the UK' s decision to leave the EU.

Greer said that her first ever visit to Ireland last week was very special and an "emotional" experience for her.
