People fawn over family’s ‘dope’ Christmas lights

A family’s Christmas lights made waves on TikTok, with viewers praising the sheer uniqueness of the display.

On 11 December, a user posted a video, which has now received over 24.6 million views, showing a light show he stumbled upon one night. The passerby focused the camera on a one-family home with a large front yard and side garage. “Easily the sickest Christmas display I’ve seen,” his on-screen caption read.

At the start of the video, the house was outlined in green, red, and white alternating Christmas bulbs while an outdoor speaker was blasting “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee. As the song went into the first chorus, the lights turned into long streams of fading holiday hues. And then, out of nowhere, Christmas tree light fixtures and the subsequent display around the greenery in the front yard turned on.

For more than two minutes, the lights mimicked a remixed version of the song’s beat, changing colour and arrangement to match the high-tempo version of the holiday classic.

With 4.8 million likes, a myriad of comments poured in, with many viewers expressing their awe and envy over the over-the-top holiday display.

“What I mean when I say let’s go drive around and look for Christmas lights together,” one viewer joked confessed, while another wrote: “I know the neighbours hate this house, but it’s so dope.”

“Me randomly partying outside some stranger’s house,” someone else commented.

“Okay, but this remix is a bop,” one woman proclaimed, meaning she loved the new version of the Christmas classic.

Other followers questioned how the family was able to sleep at night with the loud music playing outside their windows, while some pointed out the electrical expense.

“Bro, how are they sleeping in there?” a curious individual asked. Next to a series of “increasing graph” emojis, a money-conscious individual added: “Their electricity bill.”

“Their electricity bill is flying through the roof,” another agreed.

Someone else joked that they “want to have THIS amount of disposable income”.

The Independent has contacted the original poster for a comment.

Recently, money-saving expert Martin Lewis spoke on his eponymous show about the estimated cost to run festive lights for the season.

“If they’re LED, I’ve worked it out, it’s roughly a penny per 12 hours per 100 bulbs. If they’re incandescent it’s 13 times that,” he said on 5 December. “If you’re worried about the cost of your Christmas lights, if you’ve got LEDs up, LEDs are perfect. You can run them six hours a day for a month and it’s 15p, so you don’t have to worry too much about the energy bill, it’s more if they’re incandescent.”
