People evacuated from Suffolk holiday park as clifftop road collapses into the sea

People have been evacuated from a holiday park in Suffolk after a clifftop road collapsed into the sea.

The coastguard was called to Pakefield Holiday Park in Lowestoft on Friday evening after a section of the road in front of caravans fell into the sea below.

Several people had to be evacuated from their caravans as some were left dangerously close to the cliff edge.

East Suffolk Council and Suffolk firefighters urged people not to walk near the edge of the base of the cliffs as parts of the beach were washed away.

A cordon has been put in place on the coastal steps to stop people from going onto the seafront.

"The beach there is now a dangerous place to be," HM Coastguard said.

"The beach at the bottom of the steps at Arbor Lane has now mostly washed away. There is now a drop on to what's left of the beach."

A spokesman for East Suffolk Council said: "The relevant authorities are addressing the impacts, and affected areas have been cordoned off as the extent of any damage is assessed.

"Known damage which affects ordinary access includes the steps down to the beach at Arbor Lane.

"Therefore, people are asked to avoid the area and stay away from locations which may still be vulnerable. There may be debris and the possibility of further collapse and public safety is a priority."
