People evacuated after fire breaks out in private workshop near A370

People have been evacuated after a fire broke out in a private workshop in Congresbury.

Fire crews from across Bristol and Somerset were called to Bristol Road in the early hours of this morning (September 19).

The nearby A370 was closed to traffic while firefighters tackled the blaze and evacuated three people.

Due to the road closure, Bristol Airport issued a warning to passengers earlier today and advised motorists to allow extra time for their journeys.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue has confirmed the cause of the fire is thought to be accidental.

"At 2.41am, crews from Clevedon, Winscombe, Yatton, Weston and Southmead fire stations were called to a fire in a private workshop on Bristol Road in Congresbury," he said.

"On arrival, firefighters used one high pressure hose reel and two ground monitors to extinguish the fire.

"They also removed four cylinders for cooling and evacuated three people. The cause is thought to be accidental."
