People 'driven mad' by noise that kept them awake for hours

People in a part of Liverpool were left bleary-eyed and baffled this morning by a "loud humming noise".

The annoying noise, which was reportedly heard from 3am to 6am had kept residents awake for hours.

People in Speke who heard the noise said they were used to noises coming from the airport, but they had never heard a noise so loud before.

A post was uploading to a Speke Facebook group, asking: "Did anyone else hear that loud humming noise from 3am this morning until about 6?"

Many group members responded to say they had heard the noise and had been kept awake by it.

One woman posted: "I've seen it posted on here before but not heard it until last night...we were checking all over the house for where it was coming from, ha ha".

Another woman replied: "It was so loud last night, I gave in and shut the windows which helped a bit!"

A man said: "If you live by the airport it’s normal to hear noises like this".

However, for some, this was not the usual ambient airport noise they had become accustomed to.

A woman replied: "That's the worst I've heard it, sounded like the boiler was going."

Another woman said: " I heard it too! Never heard it that loud before, I thought I’d left the washing machine on".

Whatever the cause of the noise, it had kept people awake in the early hours.

Replying to the original post, a woman said: "I'm knackered kept me awake all night".

Another said: "Yes it drove me mad".

However, a worker at John Lennon Airport posted to say he didn't think the airport could have been the source of the noise.

He said: "It's defo not the airport unless it was snowing or icy (snow ploughs etc) there was nothing operating here through [the] night. I have been here since early all aircrafts grounded till 6.00 no other activity going on, no machinery etc".

Other people have since reported the noise has started up again this morning.
