People drinking booze in public spaces in Altrincham town centre can now be fined £100

People drinking alcohol in public spaces in Altrincham can now be fined £100 by the council.

Town hall bosses have imposed a Public Spaces Protection Order on all public places in the town centre.

This includes parks and streets, but does not include public places connected to pubs, bars and restaurants.

The order means that anyone caught drinking booze in a public place could be fined £100.

Trafford Council said it has been imposed to ensure people can socialise in a 'responsible and safe manner' to stop the spread of coronavirus.

In a post on Twitter, a council spokesperson said: "We're reminding everyone socialising in the centre of Altrincham to do so in a responsible and safe manner to stop the spread of coronavirus.

"We have imposed a Public Spaces Protection Order on all public places not connected to pubs, bars and restaurants.

"This means you cannot consume alcohol in these areas and you could be fined £100 if you do so."

In the first week of local lockdown, Trafford saw a marked decline in the infection rate

Cases rose rapidly in the borough in the middle of July but peaked a couple of days before the new restrictions were brought in on July 30.

The infection rate in the week ending August 1 was 33.7 per 100,000 population, but the latest data released today shows that in the week ending August 8, it went down to 23.6.
