People disappear in 'thick fog' on Wirral beach as search launched

A search and rescue operation was launched after two people disappeared in thick fog on Hoylake beach.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team were called to the beach shortly before 11am on Sunday to reports that two people were missing in the fog and could be cut off by the ride.

The team used an app called What2Words to establish the last known location of the missing persons before a search got underway.

Hoylake Hovercraft was also called in to assist the team as an off road vehicle was used to transport coastguard rescue officers across the beach.

The lights from the vehicle and sirens were used as a signal in a bid to help the people find their way back out of the fog in a safe direction.

Thankfully they were located a short time later and escorted safely back to shore.

A spokesperson from Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Thankfully this incident was concluded safely and relatively quickly, however it had the potential to be very serious due to the severity of the fog.

"We would advise beach walkers to stay close to the promenade if conditions are foggy as it's very easy to get disorientated and conditions can deteriorate rapidly."
