People desperately tried to save man in street after he was hit by car

A man in his 50s died after being hit by a car despite heroic efforts from brave witnesses.

Police were called to Stopgate Lane in Norris Green at around 5.10pm on Wednesday, November 10 following reports of a man being hit by a car.

Once at the scene officers found the man, in his 50s, had been hit by a silver Ford Focus on Walton Hall Avenue.

The man was rushed to hospital for his injuries but died a short time later.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting police with enquiries.

Road closures were in place on the East Lancashrie Road and Stopgate Lane.

One eyewitness said when they arrived at work at 5.30pm emergency services were just closing the road.

She said: "I've heard that a man was ran over whilst trying to cross the road. We have had police, ambulance and the fire service here this evening."

Another person added that police all of a sudden "swarmed" the road.

They said: "The first I noticed was the flashing lights outside my window, the road looked like absolute chaos after the police and ambulance swarmed the road."

Around 10 police cars were still at the scene of the crash at 8.30pm and forensics officers were taking pictures of evidence markers in the road.

ECHO readers paid tribute to the man in his 50's and spoke of how heroic witnesses tried to save his life.

Sue Curran said: "Man in his 50s killed after being hit by a car. Looked really bad. Was near there just after it happened. So sad. Thinking of his family."

Victoria Clare said: "Witnessed this, it was so sad to see. Rip to the gentleman thoughts are with his family."

Kelly Walsh said: "So sad. I was stuck in traffic and seen him getting CPR, really hoped he would be ok. Prayers go out to his family."

Danielle Ryan said: "Went past this on the bus earlier and saw someone giving the man CPR in the middle of the road. Heartbreaking."

Roy Ward said: "My wife came home from work just before 5.30 really upset. She was at the lights and said a man was on the road and a girl only in her 20s was performing CPR on him and said it was awful and hoped he would be OK."
