People 'cut off by tide' after going on 'extremely dangerous' derelict Birnbeck Pier

The old Victorian pier in Weston-super-Mare has been derelict for years and is extremely dangerous.

Unfortunately that does not stop people from trying to explore it.

The bank holiday weekend proved no different, with Weston-super-Mare Coastguard Rescue Team getting called out to Birnbeck Pier.

A spokesperson said: "We were alerted to persons on Birnbeck Island, cut off by the tide.

"Fortunately 4 of the crew were out on patrol and were able to arrive on scene in super quick time while the rest of us made our way to meet them."

The team carried out searches of the old pier's buildings but could not find the people.

The spokesperson added: "Damage was found to the old boathouse doors so the guys checked inside.

"No-one was found but the break-in has been reported to the police.

"As we were keeping eyes on a member of the public came up to us and said he had seen 3 people come back via the walkway.

"This is considered to be extremely dangerous as the wood has rotted away over the years of neglect and there is a high risk of falling through. Luckily this time it seems everyone made it back safely."

The team is urging people to look at Birnbeck Pier from the safety of the mainland and not to risk their lives by crossing over.
